A$AP Rocky: the rapper who magnetizes the fashion business

While the web is spreading the news of a collaboration between  Lana Del Rey and A$AP Rocky, we seize the opportunity to recall the rapper’s connections to the fashion business.

As reported by highsnobiety: “It’s an accepted fact that A$AP Rocky is among the most (if not the most) fashionable men in hip-hop” and probably it is for this reason if the fashion system has involved him so many times.


Everything started when Rakim Mayers, better known as A$AP Rocky, has been on the cover of the famous magazine Dazed & Confused for the February 2012 issue.

After that, many other covers and editorial came, often for renown magazines such as L’Uomo Vogue, GQ and Interview.

The rapper also started to appear in various campaigns, as the one for DKNY (Spring/Summer 2014) in which A$AP seemed at his ease next to professional models Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, Eliza Cummings and Dylan Rieder. 

This collaboration has been particularly successful so that the rapper has been asked to walk for the the brand’s Fall/Winter 2014/2015 fashion show.

Later the american signer featured many other magazines’ editorials and cover and in 2015 he was selected for the Alexander Wang 10th anniversary Do Something campaign conceived to promote the charity T-Shirt created in partnership with DoSomething.org (a major organization in supporting youth and social change). A$AP was one of the 38 stars chosen for being “people that we really respect or who have been a big part of our brand, who helped support us, who’ve given us support, been supporting us all these years,” Wang told Yahoo Style.


Finally in 2016 the beginning of the collaboration with Dior on the occasion of the Fall/Winter 2016 campaign.

The fact that a rapper has become the face of one of the most legendary haute couture houses of the world can be be explained by the saying opposites attract or, in this case, opposites sell.

Even if the link between A$AP and Dior can seem a hazard, the french company affirmed that he “embodies the empowered masculinity of today’s urban dandy.”


Risky or not, the campaign has been a success and the photos featuring the rapper in a scarlet trench coat could not be more impactful.

The relation with this company has continued also for the Spring/Summer 2017 campaign in which A$AP Rocky modeled with songwriter Boy George, model Ernest Klimko, and actor Rami Malek.

But in 2016 his collaborations with the fashion system were not only with Dior. Indeed the singer also started to work with J.W. Anderson. On the website of the brand is reported: “A$AP Rocky first displayed his interest in the brand when seen wearing emblematic J.W.Anderson on tour and in his music video “Jukebox Joints”. He quickly and naturally became a brand ambassador and presented himself on these occasions wearing Autumn Winter 2015 menswear. Rocky and Anderson have come together to create a youthful collection of modern men’s casualwear – a result of common interest in each other’s creativity.”
